American Idol - "The Top 7 Compete Again", April 21, 2009

By Marcus

Tonight the remaining Top 7 compete while performing Disco music from the 1970s. The tension continues to build because tomorrow night the bottom two will be sent home. Yes, you read that correctly, two will be packing their bags and drying their tears. And remember that there is no more “judges save” to rescue one of those in the bottom. As each contestant steps up on the state, they have to give their very best performance to impress not just the judges, but you the voters who control their fate. Kind of gives you a feeling of power, doesn’t it?

First up was Lil Rounds singing “I’m Every Woman.” It was an uninspiring, run of mill and quickly forgotten attempt to express her inner goddess. Well, the goddess’ temple flames were quenched by her continued inability to connect with the audience. Her choreography was coarse and her vocals were spotty. Paula did share that Lil had been ordered total vocal rest because she has lost her lost. Okay, we understand that but what voice Lil did have was certainly tired and dull. And I am sad about this because she has vocal powers that somehow have been muted. Call 1 866 436 57 01.

Playing his guitar and singing “She Works Hard For The Money” was Kris Allen whose performance was not something you would write home about or even want an autograph after hearing it. It lacked spark. He needed more emotional feeling and when you thought that he almost had it, he backed off. The best thing about the performance was the talented bongo accompanist. He certainly did better than Lil, but that isn’t saying too much at this late stage of the game. Do you know real disco? When you really hear disco, you want to jump up and dance off your shoes. While listening to Kris, you just wanted to tie the laces with a double knot. Call 1 866 436 5702.

After yawning through the above two renditions, finally we felt the disco beat with Danny Gokey singing “September.” His self assured nature and smooth style was evident that he not only could perform disco, but he felt the music as well as singing it. That ability to feel the song and then to translate it into something special is a rare gift and Danny had that gift wrapped in a “star” bow. Call 1 866 436 5703.

Strutting her own hot stuff, Allison Iraheta dazzled us with “Hot Stuff.” She has massive vocal talents wrapped about her dangerous panther growls that send shivers down our spines. And we fall victim to her brilliance. We just want to hear more and more. She is ready for a solo tour and I want to buy a ticket. Call 1 866 436 5704.

It has to be hard to follow Adam Lambert. He is an original who does need a script to stand out nor special stage direction because he has that “it” factor that only a few of the super singer stars possess. He has it. It is there when he stands on stage as he did tonight in a peaceful quiet pose singing “If I Can’t Have You” like no one has ever sung it before. And his eyes. Oh, these deep set powerful eyes. Do you look into his eyes? It is as if you are looking into a Lifeboat of souls being carried by his vocals. You feel that he is singing to you and you alone. What a beautiful talent with such a range. Yes Adam, you are special. Call 1 866 436 5705.

I think that Matt Giraud will stay alive in the contest with his “Staying Alive” only because of the poor performances of Lil and Kris. And we will hear Anoop next. Matt just sang the standard version of that song with absolutely no personal craftsmanship to make it his. It was a copy. A very good quality copy but where is the originality? Maybe he doesn’t have any? If he makes it through to next week and sings then like he sang tonight, he is heading for the cold showers. Call 1 866 436 5706.

Finally we heard the uninspiring voice of Anoop Desai singing “Dim All The Lights.” Indeed, his days on Idol may be dimming quite quickly after that very pedestrian version that could not sell more than a handful of records to family and close friends. This is American Idol where we want to discover real talent and Anoop just doesn’t have it. Call 1 866 436 5707

And that wraps up American Idol and now the phone lines are open for the votes. Make you selection and vote, vote, vote. And then return right here tomorrow night to learn who will be the two sent home and read my recap written just for you.
