American Idol - "The Top 8 Compete", April 7, 2009

By Marcus

We are now down to the Top Eight with the competition getting tighter each week. Tonight each of the contestants needs to step it up. There is no room for an average performance nor for even a fine performance. We need to see excellence if they want to stay in the Idol game. This evening’s theme were songs from the year of their respective births. And here is my recap…..

Born in 1980, Danny Gokey sang a tepid version of “Stand By Me.” It was not thrilling and lacked personality. It was almost like drinking yesterday’s reheated coffee. Danny really failed to deliver his expected “wow ‘em vocals.” Call 1 866 436 5701.

Playing his guitar and rocking to the 1985 hit “All She Wants To Do Is Dance” was Kris Allen’s pick. He is on his way to the finals because each week we see and hear his talent and watch him grow with confidence in his singing ability. Call 1 866 436 5702.

The power of Lil Rounds vocals was heard a couple of times in her 1984 “What’s Love Got To Do With It.” We expect a lot from Lil and perhaps because our expectations are so high that when she doesn’t quite reach what we want, we feel disappointed for her and for ourselves. She needs to reach deep inside and regain that strength that made her an early standout. Call 1 866 436 5703.

We went back to 1986 with “True Colors” sung by Anoop Desai. It was a pleasant enough performance but he really didn’t take emotional ownership of it. There was little there to make anyone want to rush out and purchase it or even to listen to it again. He has lost his excitement. Call 1 866 436 5704.

We went back to 1985 for Scott MacIntyre who did not play the piano but accompanied himself with guitar while singing “The Search Is Over.” And although he is versatile, talented and cheerful, he really doesn’t have the vocal reach to have successfully performed that song. Call 1 866 436 5705.

But it was totally different experience for us when Allison Iraheta performed the 1992 hit “I Can’t Make You Love Me. ” She sang it with a deep understanding of the words, the fear of those words and the worry that her lover would be going away. She sang it like she meant it and that is a sign of a true performer versus just a good singer. Call 1 866 436 5706.

Finally after a personal dry spell, Matt Giraud is back with a flashy version of the 1985 smash hit “Part-Time Lovers.” He was cool in his vocals, sexy in his moves, and he had us listening and wanting more. Call 1 866 436 5707.

Last up was Adam Lambert from whom we also expect a lot. We drifted back to 1982 for “No One Knew Me.” Well, after that polished moving powerful performance, everyone will know Adam’s talent. He is ready right now to record and you know what? I want to buy his first CD, I want to see him in concert because no matter what happens on Idol, he is a winner. He was so astounding that he easily outclassed the above singers and is on his way to greatness. Adam Lambert’s name will soon be in lights. Call 1 866 436 5708.

And that completed tonight’s competition. Don’t you dare not vote for your favorite and return here tomorrow night for my recap of who stays and who goes home. And remember, it is written just for you.
