American Idol - "The Top Nine Compete", March 31, 2009

By Marcus

Tonight we are down to the Top Nine. The pressure continues to mount as each contestant knows that they have to give their all and there are no second chances. Are they up to the task?  You can find out from my recap.

First up was Anoop Desai trying to regain his earlier energy and he almost accomplished it with “This Girl Got a Hold On Me.” He sang well and that very was evident. But he didn’t really get into a solid connection with the audience. It was as if he was just performing for himself and maybe some close friends and family members, but he forgot us. He forgets his audience. He needs to step it up because his song tonight was nothing special. Call 1 866 436 5701.

Megan Joy Corkrey wanted to make a comeback statement with “Turn Your Lights Down Low” but we never heard her. She sang it flat as a pool table. There was no emotional connection to the words and she had a smile that looked like it had been pasted on with quick drying glue. She is in trouble unless another contestant really stumbles. What happened to the Megan Joy who excited us? I think she has gone on vacation… Call 1 866 436 5702.

Danny Gokey wanted to express his emotions better and he did it brilliantly with “What Hurts The Most.” He sang as if he meant every single word and we the audience believe in him. Call 1 866 436 5703.

Playing the guitar on stage for the first time, Allison Iraheta sang “Don’t Speak” with her raspy deep woods voice that continues to entertain us. And to think that just two weeks ago she was in the bottom three!  Tonight she should be in the top three. Call 1 866 436 5704.

It was just Scott MacIntyre with his piano performing “Just The Way You Are.” It was a fully enjoyable performance that almost reached out to touch our soul. Almost. It may have been his best vocals since the contest commenced. Call 1 866 436 5705.

Matt Giraud wanted to find his passion with “You Found Me.” Perhaps it was his self-accompaniment on the keyboard that overtaxed his ability, because there was little passion to be found. Call 1 866 436 5706.

Lil Rounds sang “I Surrender” and she foolishly surrendered her deep powerful vocals for a safe “ho-hum” song that will quickly be forgotten. I don’t think she is in trouble but where is that Lil that we love so much?  Call 1 866 436 5707.

Served up on a sizzling platter of snapping rocking rock was “Play That Funky Music” by Adam Lambert who is by far one of the best of tonight’s performers and easily heads into the finals. Call 1 866 436 5708.

The last to perform was Kris Allen who took a fantastic thirty year old song “Ain’t No Sunshine” and made it so contemporary that it could sell as a single right now, today. He made it his own with unique vocals, confident styling and he also was one of the best of the tonight’s singers. If I would make a prediction, the final two will Adam and Kris. Call 1 866 436 5705

And that wraps up my recap. Who is in trouble? It is Anoop and Megan who will be filling two of the bottom three chairs. And to find out what happens, return here tomorrow evening for my recap written just for you.
