filled Then we had Ashley singing “Footprints In The Sand” which was co-written by none other than Simon Cowell. Although her performance was not a standout, it was good enough to earn a gold ticket. Casey Carlson’s voice and pretty looks earned her a ticket. If she can stay competitive, she may become a singing “package” as she is very photogenic. Then we listened to opera trained Brian. He had totally dropped out of music for two years and now hoped that in his audition he would find redemption. He didn’t. Spastic leg jumping Von Smith commenced “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” with a roar and a bellow that would have awaken the newly dead, but then he actually started to sing with a decent range and pitch. I was surprised at how well he did considering his dismal start. Did he earn a gold ticket from the demanding judges? YES! Jason Castro’s brother Michael with punk pink hair told the judges that if Jason could sing well enough to end up as number four on last season’s American Idol, he would give it a shot even although he has been singing for just 20 days (yup, one day short of three weeks). And he was good enough to earn a golden ticket. Will he do better than Jason? A former bar singer, Matt Breitzke gave up the vocals when his son was born and he needed a steady day job to support the family. He sang “Ain’t No Sunshine” with sufficient depth and conviction to earn a golden ticket. His welding days may be gone forever. Meantime, Jasmine the Jazz Singer better hope she has a day job as she will get no singing job. Jessica lives with her 93 year
old granny in the tiny Female rapper sisters, Asia and From the Wisconsin
snowfields, Jamar Rogers truly over sang “California Dreaming.” But the judges saw potential and
he is on his way to Mourning the loss of his wife,
music teacher Danny Gokey made her very proud with a sparkling rendition of “I Heard
It Through The Grapevine” as he easily won a ticket to Although he dressed like the stereotypical computer geek, Anoop Desai’s vocals earned him a golden ticket. Even with his two cheerleaders providing back-up singing, Andrew failed to move the judges with “My Girl.” Perhaps they need to think about doing community musicals. Middle school band director Asa
Barnes was sufficiently impressive with “The Way You Make Me Feel” to win himself
and his four year old daughter a “My mom says I can’t sing” confessed Michael who was wearing around his neck a grammar school vocal award medal. Well, mama was 100% right. He can’t sing. Dennis’ “With You” was off
key and ragged. But his begging “I’m very very very very very good…my mama
flew in from A sleepy Mia tried to convince us and the judges that she was the next singing sensation with “Loving You.” But all she did was screech like an owl and then complain about the decision. It was all together a very different story for the last singer of the day, Lil Rounds. A mother of three, she and her husband’s apartment was destroyed by a tornado and they are now living in a cramped weekly hotel rental. Well, all that may change thanks to her strong performance of “All I Do.” The judges proclaimed her as being among the very best of any singer thus far in the contest. And that ended Part Two of American Idol with 26 more contestants flying high to Hollywood. Don’t forget to return here again for my recap which is written just for you.
