American Idol - "The Wild Card Eight Battle For The Last Seats"

By Marcus

Resurrected from the common singers, these eight will perform not just to the audience, but primarily to the judges who will make the selection of three. It could be a tough night with difficult decisions.

First up was Jesse Langseth who told us she "wants the opportunity to show my range" with "Tell Me Something Good." Well, the good about her singing was that it was an improvement over past her past efforts but although she tried to make the song sexy and hot, she really didn't deliver 100%. And tonight anything short of perfection will not be good enough.

Matt Giraud told us he is "singing for my life." His nicely performed a bluesy rendition of "Who's Loving You" with a couple of missed riffs and some slightly forced growls. But he had a strong overall performance. However, he is a one-sided singer and the Idol crown needs more than a single facet.

Wanting to "rock the house" Megan Joy Corkrey jazzed "Black Horse" and showed us her inner self---unique, gutsy, and comfortable. She has found her special spot.

Thus far tonight, the worse performance was given by Von Smith singing "Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word." His intro was pitchy, the vocals quivered and his nervousness and uncertainly was there for us to see. There was absolutely nothing exciting about his singing.

Jasmine Murray hoped that she "picked the right song" with "Reflections." Not only did she pick the right song, but she showcased it with her powerful vocal range. Although at times she seemed too robust. I think she is back in the running.

"I want to show my personality" was the mantra of Ricky Braddy singing "Superstition." Sadly, he had an uneven performance with stage movements that seemed constricted as if he were counting steps. As to personality, he is still searching.

An overly dramatic and tearful Tatiana Del Toro told us "I'm ready to sing for you, America." And like the blue plate special, she again for the third time sang "Saving All My Love For You." She had a rough spot with some bottom of the well low notes, but ended powerfully. I wonder if she knows any other song but that one?

Anoop Desai wanted to show the judges that "Anoop dog is back" and he did with "My Prerogative." He was exciting. The crowd loved him and forgave his early problems with missed bass notes. But he was into his groove tonight.

Now the judges retired and returned with their decisions to fill the remaining twelve chairs. They selected: Jasmine Murray, Megan Joy Corkrey, and Matt Giraud. But the judges' decision was too close to really call, so they selected Anoop Desai as the 13th Finalist. And that is a first for American Idol.
