American Idol Semi-Final Round 2/25/09, "The Second Group of Twelve Compete", Summary of Episode 14

By Marcus

Tonight the second group of twelve singers compete for three spots in the Top 12. While tensions mount like a coiled spring, each singer will only have about 120 seconds to impress judges and the voting public. Who did well? Who faltered? Here is my recap for you.

First up with a lackluster performance was Mississippi high school student, Jasmine Murray weakly singing “Love Song.” She missed many of those harsh bass notes that make this song sparkle. She has talent, but she didn’t show that to us tonight. Call 1-866 436 5701.

Second up was dueling piano player Matt Giraud with “Viva la Vida.” He didn’t give us a real feeling of living life, but more or less a sense of lost opportunity. He is a down home bluesy type of singer who missed his chance tonight. Call 1-866 436 5702.

After two rather unmemorable performances, the third attempt was made by Washington D.C. bartender Jeanine Vailes who also failed to impress us with “This Love.” I don’t know if she was not well rehearsed or somehow developed a case of the inner willies, but her pitch, delivery and entire performance were poor. Although Paula, Randy, and Simon all agreed on one thing, that is “you have hot legs.” But this is not a swimsuit contest. It is a singing contest and she is in trouble. Call 1-866 436 5703.

Finally we had entertainment. Not of the singing type, but of the humorous funny type that can only come forth from the multiple personalities of Nick Mitchell and his manic and slightly psychotic other half, Norman Gentle. All he really needed as a long thick purple bolo for a completed look. Engaging? Yes. Comical? Yes. Different? Yes. Memorable? Yes. But is he an American Idol finalist heading towards a singing career? No. Call 1-866 436 5704.

And after a dry spell of not very good singers, young 16 year old high school junior Allison Iraheta rocked the stage with “Alone.” She has a natural raw talent that is so wonderfully enjoyable that she is a definite contender for this season’s Idol crown. Call 1-866 436 5705.

Kris Allen nicely performed “Man in the Mirror” and remains competitive. He initially was disorganized but regained his composure. Call 1-866 436 5706.

Missing her 3 year old son, single mother Megan Corkrey has a pleasing misty gentle sound while singing “Put Your Records On” but her stilted stage choreography needs work. With a little coaching, she could be another contender. Call 1-866 436 5707.

Putting down his welding torch, family man Matt Breitzke tried to rock with “If You Could Only See.” But he really didn’t succeed. His voice was decent but his presentation was boring. He continues to struggle to really make a connection with the audience and that song didn’t help. Call 1-866 436 5708.

“Betty Davis Eyes” was the selection for Jesse Langseth who sang like her mouth was full of cotton balls. At times her words were almost garbled. I think she was trying for a Chicago jazz club style, but tonight it just wasn’t there. And that’s too bad because she has talent. Call 1-866 436 5709.

Kai Kalama took no risks with his very safe selection of “What Becomes of a Broken Heart.” It was okay, but only okay. There was nothing there to make us remember it beyond the fading of the last notes. He needs to drastically step it up. This is a contest where only the very best succeed and he has yet to make himself unique. Can he do it? I think so, but after tonight he may never ever get another opportunity. The judges constantly tell the singers that “it is all about song selection” and Kai’s lack of a good selection is exactly what the judges are preaching. Call 1-866 436 5710.

Cut during Hollywood Week in Season 7,  Mishavonna Henson had the opportunity to wow us tonight with “Drops of Jupiter.” She didn’t. She seemed very restrained and almost as if she was fearful of showing us that she is just 18 with a passion and craziness for life. Instead, she sang a dull song with no fire. Call 1-866 436 5711.

Tonight’s best singer was saved for last. Adam Lambert rocked, strutted, and sneered “Satisfaction.” He smoked his performance and is a definite lock for the top three of these twelve singers. He has been performing musical theater for years and his confidence and stage command are so far above the others. Call 1-866 436 5712.

And that is my recap of tonight’s second group of twelve. Return here tomorrow to learn who is staying and who is packing. And don’t forget to vote, starting right now!
